Artist Statement
In a sustained practice of art making involving an exploration of materials and various means of expression, I am focused on the complexities of color and color relationships, while incorporating drawing as a structural springboard.
The above four drawings are small studies, made as part of an exploration of composition, working with forms and color in an effort to find a balance between abstract and organic references.
To speak in colors, numbers, music - to read trees and sky, to listen, look and look some more - these seem fundamental to this serious business of catching light, clocking time.
Maurie lives and works in New York City. She received a BFA and MFA in painting from Hunter College, studied at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, and has worked and studied at Columbia University Teachers College, and various institutions and programs in New York City.
